Born and raised on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, Stephanie Shields moved to North Carolina to pursue her Master’s degree and now resides there. Ms. Shields was raised in a family with a wide variety of musical influences, which led to her passion and pursuance of music as a career. Ms. Shields received her Bachelor of Music degree in trumpet performance at Grand Valley State University, studying with Richard Stoelzel. She received her Masters of Music Degree in trumpet performance at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts studying under Judith Saxton. Both schools have provided Ms. Shields with opportunities to perform throughout the United States and Internationally, including countless performance opportunities in a wide variety of ensembles, shaping her into the versatile musician she is today.
Ms. Shields is an active teacher and freelancer in Maryland and North Carolina. She is a member of the cornet section in the North Carolina Brass Band and has recorded two albums with the ensemble. Currently Ms. Shields serves as a member of ArtistCorps, an AmeriCorps program affiliated with the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. She serves as head of the Arts Integration Team, creating and providing arts-based lessons to high-need students in the community.
Ms. Shields has spent her entire life on the Chesapeake Bay, making the water her other passion. She exploits this passion through crabbing and fishing commercially in her free time.
